Due to our focus on empowering nationals to be the ones making sustainable changes in the countries we serve, we believe the potential impact of Leadership Mission International is endless. We believe that throughout history, Americans have not been the ones making the greatest changes in developing countries. Rather, it has been nationals who hold the key to real and lasting change. Therefore, LMI understands that our impact is NOT through our American staff, but rather through the leaders who we empower.
Our students and graduates are already having a positive impact throughout the entire country of Honduras, even though the organization is only a few years old. Following are just a few examples of the great things that are occurring in various communities throughout Honduras:
Academic Supply Store
TLC Graduate Yanetzi Ortiz successfully launched “El Classroom,” an academic supply and service business located in the department of Colon, in early 2015. As a high school student, Yanetzi, like all student in the community of Isletas, became extremely frustrated by the fact that she needed to often travel one hour on a bus just to buy pencils, pens, notebooks, and other items needed at school. After graduating from The Leadership Center, she successfully launched a new business in her home community that offers all the necessary academic supplies and services that students in her community previously had to travel for. Supporting Leadership Mission International allows graduates like Yanetzi Ortiz to solve real problems in their communities through successful social entrepreneurship.
Please check back in December for a video that shows Yanetzi talking about her new business.
Your generosity in supporting our investment fund allows graduates like Yanetzi to immediately launch their own businesses upon the successful completion of their studies at The Leadership Center.
Clean Water Anyone?
As the culmination of the 2nd year curriculum at The Leadership Center, all students are required to work together as a group to implement a project in a nearby community. In 2015, five of our students worked in the community of Los Valles to improve their access to clean water. In partnership with the local mayor’s office, our students build a new system for successfully gathering, storing, and transporting the water to the approximately 50 families throughout the community.
Your support of Leadership Mission International allows our students to have hands-on leadership experience during their studies, while at the same time providing assistance to communities located near to The Leadership Center.
Helping other Nonprofit Organizations
Marta Lopez graduated from The Leadership Center in 2013. After working as an English teacher in her home community for approximately one year, she decided to move to the city when she accepted a position at a multi-national nonprofit organization that provides clean water to communities throughout the entire country of Honduras. The English and Leadership education she received at The Leadership Center was vital in being qualified to receive such an offer. We hope that many more graduates will go on to doing such important work upon graduation.
Your donation to Leadership Mission International allows graduates like Marta to follow her dreams of earning a comfortable salary while working in a job that makes a positive impact in many communities in Honduras.
Alex Lopez, 2014 graduate of The Leadership Center, is currently studying Marketing and Management at a technical college in the United States. Upon graduation, she plans to return to Honduras and start her own business in La Moskitia – a very remote part of the country.
We imagine that other graduates will also use their education at The Leadership Center as a stepping stone for further education. There are currently students studying with us that hope to pursue careers in engineering, medicine, law, and more. Because of their economic status and educational background prior to attending The Leadership Center, there is little chance in them being accepted at institutions of higher education, even in their own country. Yet as a graduate, the educational opportunities are much greater in number.
Your support of Leadership Mission International allows students like Alex to pursue their dreams in obtaining degrees from universities so that they can have profound impacts on their home communities.
Educating the Youth
Leadership Mission International currently has several graduates teaching in local private and public schools in Honduras. Furthermore, our current students have frequently visited other communities to share their knowledge at local schools.
Because of their English ability, our graduates are highly attractive to primary and middle schools. Furthermore, Honduras currently only has approximately 75% of their teaching positions filled. This means that classes are frequently canceled for the lack of having a qualified teacher.
Your sponsorship of one student helps ensure that youth around the entire country will have a teacher so that they can complete their studies.
